Take a look at how you answer your phones. Do you have a receptionist answering phones? What happens when there are too many lines ringing or they run to the restroom? How are the phones being handled then? There are hosted phone systems that you can get to answer the calls and send them through a menu. This will auto-route all of the calls.

Additionally, you can send calls to your employees at their computer through VoIP. The “voice over IP” phone solutions are becoming more popular. As long as an employee has a headset, they can take a call without ever picking up the phone. There are many benefits to… Continue reading

Data Backup and Recovery Options for Modern Businesses

In today’s business world, the security of a company’s data is vital to its smooth functioning and in many cases, its very existence. An unexpected data loss, whether it is from a technical error, natural disaster or other event, can cripple a company’s operations, leading to lost profits and angered clients. For this reason, and a variety of off-site disaster recovery options exist in order to permit a business to quickly recover from any data loss. An online cloud based backup solution can allow the company to maintain a real-time record of its transactions and operations in order to prevent a disaster from irrecoverably destroying company information.

Cloud backup services are especially useful because they can allow a company to back up its data at one or more remote locations. By doing so, the company can immunize itself from data loss even in the case of disaster that damages or destroys its business location. More importantly, unlike physical backup methods such as tape backups, a cloud backup can provide a real time data backup service.

VaultScape is an example of a well-respected online backup service provider. By providing a wide range of cloud backup options, VaultScape can provide… Continue reading

The Evolution Of Cloud Communications

“Cloud communications” can be a pretty broad term, because it covers everything to do with Internet-based data and/or voice communications where the communication is being managed by a third-party. Typically, the organization using the communication services isn’t hosting them, and they are used through the web. Recently, cloud communications started hosting voice as well as data transmissions, and with the onset of “unified communications” the industry hit a new era.

Originally, companies that provided cloud communication services only offered data services, allowing for the sending of text and other information through the Internet. However, technology developed to easily allow for voice transmissions too, create a ease-of-use and making web-based electronic communications feel that much more natural. The next step was to allow for combining telephony, instant messaging, video conferencing and other real-time communication tools with non-real time tools. These include things like voicemail, email or SMS.

That’s where unified messaging and unified communications step in. Technology in the cloud communications industry has made it possible for all of these forms of online communication to be integrated, allowing companies and thus customers to pick and choose what is the most convenient.

SQL-ity Education

When building a website, SQL construction has become a very popular structure and is considered the standard amongst Web 2.0 websites. The structure makes it somewhat easy to keep records of data such as email lists and user data for websites. Websites such as online web service sites, E-Commerce websites, and community websites rely on not much more than SQL to manage data and purchases. SQL is an acronym that stands for “Structured Query Language”. This structured query language is a computer language that is used to build and query databases. SQL has very loose syntax, which makes it an easy program to learn, however, learning the most detailed construction of the structure is a little bit harder. Since the structure has such loose syntax, that makes it ideal for using on the Internet. This is especially true since there are several different free database applications available such as SQL servers.

Structured query language has several different basic functions. Some of these basic functions are things such as dropping data out of different databases, inputting information and modifying information. Structured query language in addition to HTML (which stands for “Hypertext Markup Language”) is a wonderful tool for use on the… Continue reading

Web Hosting Options

Whether we are in the advanced stages of setting up our website, or we are just getting started, it may be time to think about setting up our own web host. Although some people consider a free web platform as the right choice, the smart webmasters will more than likely steer in the direction of a professional web hosting company, where the interface is easy to use and the webmaster is comfortable enough to configure his/her options.

Most webmasters are experienced enough to know that the right amount of bandwidth is essential when considering which hosting company to choose. Where Can I Buy A Cloud?

Although there has been some debate recently over whether or not private clouds actually exist as a separate entity within the IT environment, most consultants have come down on the side that they are in fact distinct as a category.
One analyst, James Urquhart of Cisco, went so far to patiently explain that as the internet is to a corporate intranet, the cloud is to a private cloud- end of story.
For business owners and IT professionals that are looking to leverage their internal applications onto the intranet and internet, it is therefore easy to understand sometimes why there can be a little confusion.
There are a lot of private cloud hosting offerings, like at, with different types of benefits and depending on the vendors, you may end up with a fairly different description depending on one’s implementation.
If the goal truly is to move to private cloud hosting for some or all of your application or virtualization needs, one of the first things you will want to look at is infrastructure that a company provides you with. Utilizing the resources of members of a cloud partner program can be one way that you can accomplish… Continue reading

Finding A SIP provider

Finding an SIP provider can be a simple process. However, it is not always easy. The best way to choose one provider is to determine which company gives the best service within a five mile radius of the home and desired area of service that needs the SIP.

SIP stands for Session Initiative Protocol. A person who wishes to use this service will more likely than not want to be able to make video and voice calls over the Internet. The service generally allows a person to call someone from a different country, or within the country, at a certain amount of cents per minute. This is of course assuming that the person who desires the SIP service to be in the United States. However, SIP services around the world offer the same type of service, but the only difference is that the currency applied is different.

Unified communications services are available through SIP providers. Let’s say, for example, that two people from different parts of the world utilize the same SIP provider for their Internet calling services. Should these people decide to contact each other, it will be much cheaper, if not free, because they are calling through the… Continue reading

Is Session Initiation Protocol better than Primary Rate Interface?

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) offers an advantage for small businesses that have moved to VoIP. To understand the advantage, we must first look at the issue of using SIP trunking versus PRI (Primary Rate Interface).

In traditional telephone systems, physical wires are installed on site, but a SIP trunk replaces this with a SIP trunking provider that offers virtual provisioning. As a result, the need for a local Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) gateway is eliminated, as is the need for the Primary Rate Interface (PRI), which can be costly, especially to small business. To deploy SIP trunking, your IP PBX will need to have a SIP trunking connectivity port, and most modern IP PBXes do include this functionality as a standard feature. At the same time, your firewall should be SIP-enabled to allow for VoIP calls to be protected. Again, most modern firewalls are SIP-capable.

Visit for more information on Session Initiation Protocol vs Primary Rate Interface.

There are actually three components to a SIP environment, starting with the SIP-enabled IP PBX. The Internet telephony service provider (ITSP) forms the second component, providing a connection between the IP network and the PSTN. Lastly, the border element (such as… Continue reading

Recruiting for Technology Positions

Finding the right personnel for your company is a difficult process, no matter what the industry. It is of even greater importance in the process and recruitment of IT professionals for your business. This is why so many companies are looking outside of their ranks for help, by utilizing professional enterprise recruiting firms. This is one way to draw from a pool of better skilled job applicants, but without having to go through the difficult process of weeding out unqualified persons. This is especially true for larger corporations, where getting the right person hired quickly is necessary. Often these companies are replacing someone and need an immediate person to step in, hopefully with the background where training will not be needed. What is Microsoft Office?

Microsoft Office is a proprietary commercial office suite of inter-related desktop applications, servers and services for the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems, introduced by Microsoft on August 1, 1989. Initially a marketing term for a bundled set of applications, the first version of Office contained Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Over the years, Office applications have grown substantially closer with shared features such as a common spell checker, OLE data integration and Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications scripting language. Microsoft also positions Office as a development platform for line-of-business software under the Office Business Applications brand.

The current versions are Office 2010 for Windows, released on June 15, 2010; and Office 2011 for Mac OS X, released October 26, 2010.

Most versions of Microsoft Office (including Office 97 and later) use their own widget set and do not exactly match the native operating system. This is most apparent in Microsoft Office XP and 2003, where the standard menus were replaced with a colored flat looking, shadowed menu style. The user interface of a particular version of Microsoft Office often heavily influences a subsequent version of Microsoft Windows. For example, the toolbar, colored buttons and the… Continue reading

What is SQL Server?

Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database server, developed by Microsoft: it is a software product whose primary function is to store and retrieve data as requested by other software applications, be it those on the same computer or those running on another computer across a network (including the Internet). There are at least a dozen different editions of Microsoft SQL Server aimed at different audiences and for different workloads (ranging from small applications that store and retrieve data on the same computer, to millions of users and computers that access huge amounts of data from the Internet at the same time).

True to its name, Microsoft SQL Server’s primary query languages are T-SQL and ANSI SQL.

Prior to version 7.0 the code base for MS SQL Server was sold by Sybase SQL Server to Microsoft, and was Microsoft’s entry to the enterprise-level database market, competing against Oracle, IBM, and, later, Sybase. Microsoft, Sybase and Ashton-Tate originally teamed up to create and market the first version named SQL Server 1.0 for OS/2 (about 1989) which was essentially the same as Sybase SQL Server 3.0 on Unix, VMS, etc. Microsoft SQL Server 4.2 was shipped around 1992 (available bundled with IBM… Continue reading

What is Microsoft Access?

Microsoft Office Access, previously known as Microsoft Access, is a database management system from Microsoft that combines the relational Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and software-development tools. It is a member of the Microsoft Office suite of applications, included in the Professional and higher editions or sold separately. On May 12 2010, the current version of Microsoft Access 2010 was released by Microsoft in Office 2010; Microsoft Office Access 2007 was the prior version.

MS Access stores data in its own format based on the Access Jet Database Engine. It can also import or link directly to data stored in other applications and databases.

Software developers and data architects can use Microsoft Access to develop application software, and “power users” can use it to build software applications. Like other Office applications, Access is supported by Visual Basic for Applications, an object-oriented programming language that can reference a variety of objects including DAO (Data Access Objects), ActiveX Data Objects, and many other ActiveX components. Visual objects used in forms and reports expose their methods and properties in the VBA programming environment, and VBA code modules may declare and call Windows operating-system functions.

In addition to using its… Continue reading

Microsoft Excel is a commercial spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications. It has been a very widely applied spreadsheet for these platforms, especially since version 5 in 1993, and it has almost completely replaced Lotus 1-2-3 as the industry standard for spreadsheets. Excel forms part of Microsoft Office. The current versions are 2010 for Microsoft Windows and 2011 for Mac OS X.

Microsoft Excel has the basic features of all spreadsheets, using a grid of cells arranged in numbered rows and letter-named columns to organize data manipulations like arithmetic operations. It has a battery of supplied functions to answer statistical, engineering and financial needs. In addition, it can display data as line graphs, histograms and charts, and with a very limited three-dimensional graphical display. It allows sectioning of data to view its dependencies on various factors from different perspectives (using pivot tables and the scenario manager). And it has a programming aspect, Visual Basic for Applications, allowing the user to employ a wide variety of numerical methods, for example, for solving differential equations of… Continue reading

Originally designed for the Macintosh computer, the initial release was called “Presenter”, developed by Dennis Austin[not in citation given] and Thomas Rudkin[not in citation given] of Forethought, Inc.[1] In 1987, it was renamed to “PowerPoint” due to problems with trademarks, the idea for the name coming from Robert Gaskins. In August of the same year, Forethought was bought by Microsoft for $14 million USD ($28.6 million in present-day terms), and became Microsoft’s Graphics Business Unit, which continued to develop the software further. PowerPoint was officially launched on May 22, 1990, the same day that Microsoft released Windows 3.0.

Microsoft SharePoint is a web application platform developed by Microsoft. First launched in 2001, SharePoint is typically associated with web content management and document management systems, but it is actually a much broader platform of web technologies, capable of being configured to suit a wide range of solution areas.

SharePoint is designed as a central application platform for common enterprise web requirements. SharePoint’s multi-purpose design allows for management, scaling, and provisioning of a broad variety of business applications. It provides a layer of management and abstraction from the web server, with the ultimate goal of enabling business users to leverage web features without having to understand technical aspects of web development.
